Can you leave eternity?
I think you can for
a moment. Sunset remains
looking over your shoulder
on the walk to the car. Then,
Driving by lights of town
like an animal driven
by starlight the erotic
red hue is burning into
and
through
me,
so words
fall short 94 million
miles into a single
observation of poignancy.
Does sunset have a heart to break?
If it did I wouldn’t
be so alone, so my eyes
stay on the road
because if I crashed
I’d become another ant to
flick off the stalk of
swaying cattails - see the
cattails and their breathing,
in and out golden ether.
Tomorrow is already here!
What I’m trying to say is this:
I cannot observe the sunset
and also drive my car back
to my life as a human
being in the world. I cannot
observe myself because
I am myself - sort of
thing.
Shape of
Eyes, slowly blinking
shut and opening to
some flicker of divinity,
I could be 60,
then 23. If the way
I carry my head high
through the grocery store
stays steady, and
occasionally
a glance out the window
and stopping to bear the
unbearable sunlight
for just a second or two.
